Year 6 SATs Week
The SATs are, once again, long gone and have receded into a distant memory. The Year 6 pupils approached them with composure and steadfastness. All three subjects were very fair and accessible for the majority. Obviously, pupils with special needs always find assessment situations very difficult, as their support system cannot be put into place. These pupils usually need gentle reminders about what they already know and prompts about the thinking processes. The school breakfasts throughout the week were very successful with a good turnout on all days of the week. We were very appreciative of being able to use the community hall for our breakfast arrangements. Thanks must also go to Mrs Mackenzie and Mrs Gilbert for their help at the beginning of the week. A big thank you should also go to all the children who attended the booster sessions. They deserve great credit for their commitment. The pupils will receive their SATs results with their end of year reports. Back to top
Parents' Meeting for Residential Visit: Wednesday 13th June
If your child is participating in this year's residential visit, we need you to come along to this parents' meeting as there are important issues to discuss and forms to complete. The meeting will start at 6.00 p.m. and will be completed by 7.00 p.m. at the latest. Miss Stocken will need a representative from every family. Children are welcome to come along if they wish to. Please complete reply slip at the end of newsletter. Back to top
Tag Rugby - The Welsh Way!!
We managed to win our league with 4 wins out of 5; beating Moat was the highlight as they have been champions for the last three years. In our league campaign we were top try scorers with 69 tries - we played the Welsh way!
In the Super Cup Final, we went down 15 - 17 v Highnam. We played superbly in an exhilarating, balanced final and again the children were a credit to the school - magic!

Sports Day
Mr Barrow, our PE coordinator, is currently reviewing our Sports Day format with the idea of just 'tweaking' it a little! Please note that Sports Day will take place on Tuesday 3rd July in the morning. This is a departure from our usual arrangement [the calendar previously sent out to you is now incorrect]. You will be informed of the start time before too long. Back to top
Eurovision Contest
We were delighted with the result from this year's Eurovision Contest. Following our 'in-house' competition to find our representatives, seven groups went forward to the final at Coney Hill. Class 6's entry - Toledo singing and dancing to 'Buenos Dias' [Good Morning] went down a storm and so they emerged with the highest point score. Well done to Toledo, and especially their front man Alex Grout - what a performer! Congratulations to all who took part, both here and at Coney Hill as singing in a second language in front of an audience, at this stage in their education, is a truly impressive feat. Thanks must go to Miss Stocken, who as co-ordinator for modern foreign languages, leads this initiative with determination and drive. Back to top
Friends of Innsworth Junior School Summer Fayre - Saturday 30th June
This year's summer fayre is fast approaching, as you are now aware! The 'Friends' met on Wednesday [all three of them] in order to finalise the finer details of this event. Please support the raffle as this is the main fundraiser within the fayre. A summer fayre cannot happen without goods so mark this date on your calendar as we are hoping to make this the best summer fayre ever. It is later than usual in the summer term as it is being combined with the Community Hall fayre - we hope this will work in our favour as regards the sunshine making an appearance.
All funds that the Friends make come back into school for the benefit of our pupils. Recently they subsidised a school visit, gave £1000 towards the ecology area and contributed towards the trophy cabinet in the reception area. These funds do make a difference. Back to top
Talking about sunshine
Please ensure your child is ready for those days when the outside temperature is very high. Sunscreen, water bottle, hat, etc should be in school as we all know how damaging the sun's rays can be. Water bottles are available in school for 25p each. Back to top
BBC Joseph "Any Dream Will Do" Competition
Thank you to everyone who supported the choir in the BBC competition. There were many technical problems, which meant that eventually a panel chose the winner. Although we did not win, there's still a chance that we are in the top 20 - results to be announced on Monday 11th June. Back to top
Mrs Hatton - Violin lessons
From September, there will be spaces available for pupils to take up the violin. If your child [Year 2s as well as all other year groups] is interested, let us know and we can arrange for them to sit in on a lesson this term. This will allow them to see what learning an instrument is about. Miss Schofield will be sending a letter home with information about costs and possible bursaries. Back to top
Healthy Schools Status
Next Monday we will be receiving a visit from the Local Authority in order to decide whether we should be awarded Healthy School Status. Hopefully our application will be successful as we are committed to our pupils leading healthy lives. Pupils are now very aware that food is more than just eating to satisfy our hunger. They are very knowledgeable about the need for a balance diet across the various food groups as well as the need to participate in physical exercise. In order to follow on from our last curriculum evening on the healthy lunchbox, we are now giving children a 'plate' at lunchtime, showing the various food groups. The aim of this is for the children to identify:
* which food groups they are eating from
* which food groups they need to eat more of
We are not taking the moral high ground, just continuing our commitment to the future well-being of the pupils at this school.
We want children to understand our relationship with food and accept that some foods are very good for us whilst others need to be eaten in moderation. We all deserve a treat now and again. Mine is curry! Back to top
Art Days next week 13th / 14th June
Because of our partnership with Churchdown Comprehensive, we are able to have an artist in residence for two days next week. This artist will be working with two groups of children, whilst others will be working on developing their drawing skills using the theme of 'Buildings' or 'Landscapes'. Hopefully, all pupils will enjoy this creative time next week and realise that although we are not all budding artists, we can develop the skills we have. All pupils must have an art shirt to wear as pencil, pens, crayons or charcoal can be very messy. A man's shirt is ideal as it provides good coverage. Some children may be working outside so please take note about taking care in the sunshine. Back to top
Tesco and Sainsbury's Vouchers
Any remaining vouchers must be in school by Friday 22nd June, as we have to 'spend' them before the closing date in July. We are now in the fortunate position of being able to choose items that will be of benefit to the school. Thank you very much for your commitment to sending these vouchers into school. Back to top
'Friends' - Bag2school
Thank you for being so proactive last month. Mrs Corley has informed us that we made £160 from this collection. Another fund raiser that has worked out well. Back to top
Class organisation for September
We are asking children to give us names of their friends so that when we look at the classes for our next academic year, we can try to ensure that pupils are not isolated in a new grouping.

Many of you will already be aware that as Mr Barrow was on a twelve-month contract, he will be leaving us at the end of term. He has been a marvellous teacher for our Year 6 and we deeply regret that we are unable to retain his services. What Mr Barrow has done for sport this year has been phenomenal. To use one of his own words, he has been magic! Mr Barrow's teaching skills will now be put to great use in one of the Forest schools from September - our loss is their gain. Unfortunately, this is a fall out from the closure of the RAF base and the resulting drop in pupil numbers. Back to top
Year 6 Ball
The ball has now been finalised and here are the details:
* Date is TUESDAY 17th July
* Time 6.00 p.m. to 9.00 p.m.
Look out for the letter accompanying the paper version of this newsletter. Back to top
A Few Reminders
* Years 3, 4 and 5. If you are leaving at the end of term, please ask for a blue Leavers' Form so that we keep our records up to date.
* Please label children's clothes as items are often left around at this time of year. Ties and sweaters make good goal posts!
* Please keep the children's reading going as regular practice is vital for the development of higher order skills.
It is hard to believe that we are almost approaching the run down to this current academic year. Enjoy these super light evenings as all too soon, 21st June, the longest day, will have come and gone! Back to top
