Happy New Year
The first newsletter of 2002. January 1st seems an age ago as the term is already well underway. Happy New Year to those parents whom we've not met at the school gate this term. Back to topHalf Term Week: Monday 11th - Friday 15th 2002
Half term is very early this year. It does not seem that long ago since we began the term. The idea of having a set time for the Easter holidays makes a lot of sense when you compare the length of half terms across the year. Many LEAs have opted for the week following ours. Back to topMidday Supervisor Vacancy
From Monday 18th February we will have a vacancy for a midday supervisor. The hours are term time only 12 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you are interested in being part of our school team, please contact Mrs Hamblett in the school office. Back to topChess Congress: Sunday February 3rd 2002
This year's Chess Congress will take place on Sunday February 3rd 2002 at Calton Junior School. If you are in Chess Club and feel confident that you can castle, know how to develop your pieces, and finally obtain checkmate, then make sure you ask me about this year's congress! It is a whole day - you play seven games. There are limited places available. Back to top
Chess Club
The Chess team is able to report two successful games against other schools.Played against Fieldcourt:
(Counting Only 1st 6 boards) 5 - 1 to Innsworth
(Counting all the boards played) 6 - 1 to Innsworth
Played against St Mary's:
(Counting Only 1st 6 boards) 3 - 3 a draw
(Counting all the boards played) 6 - 2 to Innsworth
I was very proud of our Chess team during both of these games. The score line comes secondary to the ability to represent the school and to show that in this computer led age, we have children who can sit for 45 minutes and do themselves great credit in a battle of the minds.
Roll on our next match! Back to top
Warwick Castle
Yesterday the Year 5 and 6 children undertook the first of the two visits to Warwick. Mr Ward made a risk assessment visit prior to the start of this week so that the itinerary was tailored to the needs of our children. How did yesterday's visit go?In the words of Sophie Phillips (Class 8)
"Yesterday was absolutely brilliant. I've been there twice before and everytime I go I learn something new. The atmosphere was sensational and it felt like we had gone back in time". Jonathan Naismith (Class 7) "I'd forgotten how good it was!"
The pupils were extremely well behaved. Many of the children have already thanked Mr Ward and all concerned for organising such a lovely day. Back to top
Year 6 Booster Groups
The three English and three Mathematics groups started with a flourish last week. Despite the early morning start, the majority of those invited to attend, did so. The response by the children has been very favourable.Well done to all Year 6. When the SATs results come out, you will feel so proud of yourselves.
Thank you to the parents who have spurred their children to get out of bed a few minutes earlier than usual. Back to top
Governors
Three new governors have been appointed to the Governing Body. Mr D Lewis, L.E.A. representative, Mr P Deal and Mr P O'Brien, both parent governors. We extend a warm welcome to them all. Back to top5-a-Side Football
Mr Ward took his footballers to Oxstalls Community School for a battle of the feet on Thursday 24th January. A lot of energy was expounded and although we did not win any of the round fixtures, we played with determination and didn't give up. A big "thank you" goes to Mr Sykes who not only took a big part in the training of the boys, but also booked a practice session at Churchdown Community Centre. In the main league the team has had a few "ups and downs" but have still worked hard. We have three more matches to play and then our overall position can be determined. I will keep you informed. Back to top
